The National Government of Argentina is taking measures to prevent the possible formation of a new monopoly in the telecommunications sector. It was emphasized that the current regulatory framework establishes strict controls over the transfer and acquisition of licenses for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) services to prevent oligopolistic positions.
ENACOM (National Communications Entity) reminded that Argentine legislation guarantees transparency in these processes and protects citizens' rights to communication, information, and accessibility. The Government is committed to taking all necessary measures to prevent the consolidation of a new monopoly in the sector, which could affect free competition and the country's disinflation process.
The Government has reduced inflation in the communications segment from 15.6% in December 2023 to 2.3% in January 2025 and seeks to continue this trend. It is highlighted that it is essential to guarantee users' right to choose, free competition, and accessibility to telecommunications services throughout the national territory.
ENACOM and the CNDC (National Commission for the Defense of Competition) are evaluating a possible acquisition in the telecommunications sector where Telecom, from the Clarín Group, would buy the Argentine operations of Telefónica. According to the authorities, this operation could concentrate nearly 70% of the market in the hands of a single economic group, which would create a possible monopoly.
The National Government is concerned about the impact that this acquisition could have on the sector and has expressed its commitment to prevent the telecommunications market from being in the hands of a single dominant player. It was emphasized that the necessary measures will be taken to safeguard public interest and protect competition and users' rights.
The proposed purchase would involve important brands such as Movistar, Movistar TV, Tuenti, and Telefónica, which would be integrated into Telecom's current services of Personal, Flow, and Fibertel.
